Blooming Brilliant: Our Nature Nurtures Spring Family Event!

Spring truly sprung into action this May, as we welcomed 27 families and 41 children to our very first Nature Nurtures seasonal event, held in the heart of Chalkwell Park!

Nature Nurtures is our year-round, intergenerational play programme, funded by Southend City Council via the Big Sparks fund, designed to bring together parents, grandparents, carers and little ones from across West Central Southend to play, learn and connect — all while soaking up the great outdoors. And what a joyful start to the year it’s been.

A Morning Full of Discovery

Chalkwell Park was the perfect backdrop for a morning of fresh air, messy hands and big smiles. We designed a series of hands-on activity stations, each one crafted to build children’s confidence, motor skills and communication, while giving grown-ups of every generation a chance to join in the fun together.

Make a Sandwich (Spring Edition) saw budding little chefs get delightfully messy, crafting healthy, Spring-shaped sandwiches with a helping hand from parents and our friendly facilitators Beverley and Jayne.

At the Little Sprouts Planting Station, children chose their own biodegradable pot, planted a sunflower or runner bean seed, and topped it off with a decorated measuring stick to track their plant’s progress at home. Grandparents and parents rolled up their sleeves to help — and the sense of pride on every child’s face said it all.

Budding young explorers turned detective at the Bug Search Station, decorating their own bug houses before foraging the park for the perfect twigs and leaves, then grabbing a magnifying glass to see what mini-beasts they could spot nearby.

And of course, no Spring event would be complete without a Teddy Bear Hunt! Families scoured the park together, ticking off their sheets as they found each hidden bear — with older siblings happily lending a hand to their younger brothers and sisters. Everyone left with a well-earned sticker (and quite a few new favourite bears)!

More Than Just a Morning Out

What made this event truly special wasn’t just the activities — it was the connections made. Several families told us they’d simply been out for a walk and stumbled across us, delighted to be welcomed in and to make new friends on the spot. That’s exactly what Nature Nurtures is all about: bringing communities together, one seasonal celebration at a time.

We’re incredibly grateful to every family who joined us, shared their feedback, and helped make our very first event such a wonderful success.

What’s Next?

We’re in the final planning stages for our Summer event, coming to you in mid-August! Expect more nature-based fun, more intergenerational connection, and plenty more opportunities to explore, play and grow together.

We can’t wait to see you there — bring the whole family, from little ones to grandparents, and let’s keep nurturing these connections all year round.

As part of the Women in the Workplace project, funded by DHSC and run by Pregnant Then Screwed and Best Beginnings, we are excited to share that we have received an Accreditation for the Empowered Foundations training with a focus on women's reproductive health in the workplace. As part of the training, our managers accessed modules based on the topics of pregnancy loss, fertility, flexible working and eliminating bias to better understand the use of language, ways to support members of staff and increase knowledge base around these specific topics. Here at City Family we are striving to improve the support available for the women in our workplace
